1940s bobbysoxer

Vintage 40s Jr. Dress: Raleigh Vintage
Shoes: Payless

Thanks to my hubby taking these for me.
I really love love love this dress. I had it in my etsy favourites for a long time and almost bought it about 20 times, but pushed it off before finally saying, "DO IT ALREADY" haha.
Again, another dress with gorgeous buttons that I love.
I'd wear this dress in 500 different colours/prints if it were possible. It is perfect.

Movies & Music Suggestion #26

Ratings are on a scale of 1-5. Anything rated over 3 stars and is in bold, is totally worth seeing! - I rate pretty harshly.

Bunny Lake is Missing 1965 (w/ Carol Lynley, Lawrence Olivier, Keir Dullea) - 3.75 stars - Way to hook me into a story! They knew how to make you have a heart for the characters and then make you believe certain things about what was going on. It was a fantastic psychological thriller. It is about a woman who recently moves to England with her daughter "Bunny" who goes missing when she drops her off at a day care. There were some violent instances.

Up The Academy 1980 (w/ Ralph Macchio, Tommy Citera, Wendell Brown) - 1/2 star - This movie stinks. I only saw it because it is the 61st Robert Downey Jr. movie I've now seen, but he was only in the soccer scenes. His father directed it, and all his movies are horrible to me.  A bunch of troublesome boys go to a strict military type of school to help them out. One of them has a girlfriend he loves who is in the girls' version of their school and he wants to be with her. They want to get their one teacher in trouble, so they try to set it up so they can do so. Lots of language and sexual innuendos that disturbed me (loads of various issues that seemed to promote sex between adults and underaged kids). It just isn't worth seeing.

The Last Song 2010 (w/ Miley Cyrus, Greg Kinnear, Liam Hemsworth) - 3 stars - A girl and her brother go to visit their dad for the summer. Little miss Ronnie isn't too happy about it and has an attitude until she finally gives into dating a volleyball player/aquarium worker.  Her whole world seems to open up and she starts to play piano again, which her father loves to play himself. Oh but drama ensues that was not expected. I didn't really know what this was going to be about, but I assumed it was a full out love story. It was more than that, it was a sad story but also happy at the same time. Miley's acting at first wasn't very convincing but in time she did a better job, although I think she had to try to poop out a few tears that weren't easy for her to do, so I wasn't convinced enough. Anyway good story. clean as well other than the usual bare midriffs and cleavage showing.

Godspell 1973 (w/ Victor Garber, David Haskell, Katie Hanley, Merrell Jackson, Joanne Jonas) - 4 stars - One of my all time favourite musicals that I've seen many times since my husband first showed it to me about 9 years ago. It tells a colourful way of the life of Jesus. My only problem I've always had with this film is that they never show Jesus coming back from the dead. Anyway the music is amazing and fun and I love it. The only content I have problems with is that "John the Baptist" smacks the one girls' bum cheeks in the fountain when they are being baptized. I don't know how many people would understand much of it if they don't know the actual Bible stories, but still. . .good to see.

Jane Eyre 1996 (w/ Charlotte Gainsbourg, William Hurt) - 2.75 stars - Oh goodness the lead girl had no soul and just seemed bored as can be in her acting that it made me bored. William Hurt of course ruled in this film and did a great job. Even little Anna Paquin did an amazing job in the beginning of the movie as little Jane. Jane is orphaned and raised in a pretty strict school. Eventually she becomes a governess to teach a young girl in an estate of Mr. Rochester. This man has a bit of a secret that she can't figure out and he is falling for her. Anyway I was a little bored because of the acting or I'd probably like this more. Pretty clean film. I don't think I recall anything bad in it at all.

Hey Hey It's Esther Blueburger 2008 (w/ Keisha Castle-Hughes, Danielle Catanzariti, Toni Collette) - 2.5 stars - A girl gets so mocked at school and doesn't really have any friends. She has to deal with her mom putting pressure on her so often.  She makes friends with a girl from another school who is a bit rebellious. She becomes popular and starts acting differently while hiding secrets from her mom. This movie was a bit cute but a bit dry at times. There was some teenage smoking, a scene of Toni Collette stripping (no nudity), and talk about sex. There also was some language in it.  I thought it was interesting how the school sang a lot of songs all choir-like when they were old hits throughout the film.

Love Nest 1951 (w/ William Lundigan, June Havre, Frank Fay, Marilyn Monroe) - 2 stars - This was such an unconvincing story for me at first. A guy comes home from his military service all cheery and his wife bought a house that is really an apartment area that he now has to run when all he wants is to do is spend some time with his wife and have a little time to relax. This guy seems like he never had a hard time ever like he is just a happy guy. Anyway when one of the tennants comes in, he has a questionable past as he is old in age and always with different older lonely women. They try to investigate while hoping they'll have the money to run the place at all. of course Marilyn Monroe always seems to play that same role that bugs me.

To Save A Life 2009 (w/ Randy Wayne, Steven Crowder, Sean Michael) - 4 stars - This is about a kid who transforms his life around after watching his childhood best friend kill himself. He struggles with his own issues at home, his girlfriend, and his faith. This movie was really good. There was some language (mainly in a song played at a party) and there were some girls not really wearing modest things and sexual tones, but nothing bad (because this is a faith-based film). There also was some suicidal tendencies shown. Great movie though. I cried. It was really good!

Columbine: Understanding Why 2007 (documentary) - 2 stars - too short. I have read so much on this issue and remember it so well when it happened that it just seems to be missing too much information, but at the same time they did understand a bit of why it might have happened due to what the boys were going through.

Corvette Summer 1978 (w/ Mark Hamill, Annie Potts) - 1 star - After a kid rebuilds a Corvette Stingray (one of my favourite cars), and someone steals it, he goes on a hunt for it. What a lame film. haha. nice cars though. There was language & sexual instances & nudity. No wonder why he was only known for Star Wars - he took horrible movie jobs like this in between them.

King Creole 1958 (w/ Elvis Presley, Carolyn Jones, Walter Matthau) - 3 stars - I loved the way they opened this film. A kid who is about to finish high school gets mixed up with a mobster when he sings for him and his club and tries to help a girl who is pretty much ruled by the head mobman. There is a lot of singing in this movie. A lot of punching and such too.   It was a good film. Elvis is always a confused womanizer in movies, it seems though!

Dogtown and Z-Boys 2002 (documentary) - 5 stars - This is my favourite documentary. We saw this in 2004 originally and loved it so much that now that my husband has purchased a longboard skateboard, he had to rewatch it. It tells the history of how the Z-boys came about and how they started to skate and have revolutionized the entire skating world because of what they would attempt back in the 70s. Amazing. There is language in this as well as a couple photos of nudity and drugs. It is excellent!!!

Music I've been listening to lately:
The Dodos - Visiter album - favourite tracks: "The Season", "God?", "Jodi", "Ashley", "Walking"
Hanson - Shout It Out album - favourite tracks: "And I Waited", "Use Me Up", "Make It Out Alive", "Thinkin' 'Bout Somethin'"

I really love this video. it's fun. "Thinkin' 'Bout Somethin'" by Hanson (and yes, Weird Al is in their video, they're friends and he's directed a few of their videos)

Holly Hobbie Wrap-Skirt Bliss

note: Vintage outfit entry coming very soon ;)

This is a bit different than what most of you have seen me wear, although those who have known me for years, it is no surprise. Mainly when I was pregnant, I lived out of wrap skirts because at least they could fit me throughout all the months.  Now that Autumn is coming soon (at least it feels like it lately), I put on my favourite autumn-time skirt!! I hate indoor shots, but it's been raining a lot lately.

I love Holly Hobbie patchwork clothes big time, actually. Prairie dresses and all that fascinate me!

weird facial expression, I don't think I was ready for the shot haha.

Here I was 7 months pregnant with my second child wearing the skirt. (ignore my hair, I had dreadlocks for 5 months that I cut out and I kept cutting my hair once it got near enough that I could make it all one length - it looked bad for about a year - wah).

Skirt: made by Bluemermaid123
Shoes: Converse and Dr. Marten MaryJanes
Shirts: Target (two tank tops together)
Sweatshirt: Delias (2004. . I wore it until I killed it with rips and holes in 2008)
Butterfly hairclip: Lila-Jo
Necklace: made by my dear best friend Emilee

Small Facts

I haven't received too many questions on formspring, and will leave the answers for a future entry. . but I thought of just listing 15 small simple facts about myself.

  • I pretty much live off of eating a peanut butter & jelly sandwich every day. I went 4 years while pregnant and nursing without any peanut butter, so I'm making up for it.
  • I was partially deaf in both ears as a small child. Jesus healed my ears and major speech problems in a dream. This stunned many. My speech therapist rejoiced about the miracle since I was deemed hopeless.
  • I've been wearing black toe-nail polish for nearly 11 years.
  • I used to collect pullip dolls (they're like a Korean version of Blithe dolls). I loved my Anne of Green Gables one most. I don't own any now.
  • I received "most unique" in my senior polls
  • I draw/paint but I have such a love/hate relationship for it that I rarely do it. I want to rush too much.
  • I have such a horrible family history of alcoholism which is why I have never had any type of wine/alcohol/beer ever. . .I haven't even had soda (been a personal lifelong choice). I live off of water. keeps me thin and healthy.
  • I didn't get my nose pierced or a tattoo until after I was married for a year. no more tattoos for me. I'm satisfied. I had wanted my nose pierced since I was 13.
  • My favourite movie and fiction book are both Gone with the Wind.
  • I'm a volunteer youth group leader at church. This will be my 4th year with the jr. high, 3rd year with senior high. It is one of my favourite things to do.
  • I have awful stretch mark scars from my firstborn son who was 9 lb. 14oz. when born. never gain more than 30 pounds in a pregnancy. I gained 60. I learned my lesson the second time around.
  • I used to swim at the gym constantly in 1995-1999. I wanted to be in the Olympics (Sydney, 2000) - someone was willing to sponsor me, but once you turn 16 you have to pay for a gym membership so I stopped (stupid!). I haven't done it since and miss it desperately.
  • My hero is my uncle Tim, who was kidnapped (by military drug-lord Guerrillas) and killed as a Christian missionary in Bogotá, Colombia, South America. His testimony has taught me so much.
  • I used to have an obsession with anime between 1989-2007 - now I have a hard time even trying to watch it (as in I can't really get into it at all) - Armitage III (Polymatrix) will always be my favourite.
  • My husband was the first person I ever made out with. . . . .(. . so you get the picture)

Story Time: Summer Lovin'

Once upon a time, there was a girl who liked a boy. She waited and waited for him to realize his own feelings for her, as he shared so much with her and went to her for everything. He knew the whole time she liked him, but that didn't stop him from being honest to her about everything. . . but his true feelings for her.

In time the boy came around. He had a peace offering and said he really cared a lot about her.

Although she was hesitant, she really did love this boy so much.

He said, "I'm sorry." and made her smile so much.

She forgave him and accepted him. They fell in love!

and in time got married.

And the love they shared multiplied.

10 summers ago, I fell in love with this man. I will forever love him and the children we've had together.

Movies & Music Suggestions #25 (I saw some good films this time!)

Inception 2010 (w/ Leonardo DiCaprio, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Ellen Page, Ken Watanabe, Cillian Murphy) - 4.25 stars - We saw this at the Drive-In, which means we had the boys with us but they were asleep (until Micah woke up really upset and I tried to calm him down best I could, so I sadly did miss some parts of dialogue). It was an intense story about a team of people who decided they would enter people's dreams. . and dreams within dreams within dreams. . .in order to stop a son from taking over his father's business (and wanting to crack into his father's safe through the dream).   In the process however there is a major struggle for the lead character Cobb. What an intense film with loads of imagery and action. It was really enjoyable and I want to see it again. It makes you think a lot, and I love those types of movies.  There wasn't any language until the last 25% of the film in which made me sad to hear. There was no nudity or anything very sexual that I recall either, other than Mrs. Cobb's outfits at times. There is violence. The actors all did an excellent job.

Despicable Me 2010 (w/ voices Steve Carrell, Jason Segel) - 2.75 stars - We saw this at the Drive-In. Leto loved it. Micah seemed to enjoy it too.  I however thought it was a bit too slow at times. It is about someone who seems to want to be a villain. He decides to adopt three girls in order to get into the home of his nemesis. His plan is to shrink the moon and steal it. The little girls were very sweet in this. I just didn't find it highly entertaining as a whole. Also, there is a scene where the little yellow dudes make copies of their bums. They didn't need to put that in the movie at all.

Florence Nightingale 1985 (w/ Jaclyn Smith, Timothy Dalton) - 3 stars - This was a film based off of the life of Florence Nightingale who helped changed the ideas of nursing back in the late 1800s in Germany by breaking barriers of the power of women nurses, and she helped make it much more organized and sanitary. She rebelled against the usual ideals that women were only worth anything for being a wife and having children. It was good, but her acting I don't think was too realistic at times.

Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog 2008 (w/ Neil Patrick Harris, Nathan Fillion, Felicia Day, Simon Helberg) - 4 stars - Oh goodness I laughed at this. The songs were really great too. The story is about a guy who pretty much pretends to be a villain, one who will overtake the world through evils. Thing is, he has a girl he really likes and his arch nemesis seems to be where her eyes linger.  There was an exposed hand gesture in this, otherwise I don't think there was anything actually bad in it. It is short but really worth seeing if you want a good laugh and like music!

SLC Punk 1999 (w/Matthew Lillard, Michael Goorjian, Devon Sawa, Jason Segel) - 2 stars - I will say the ending was very nice. I really liked the character "Heroin Bob" a lot because he reminded me a bit of myself - since he was anti-drugs (he did smoke and drink though) and pretty much being his own person (a leader). This is set in the 80s with the outburst of various types of punks and parts of what was said of them made me laugh since they weren't too far off like the misconceptions seem to usually be. This movie had a lot of language, sexual scenes, and loads of drug content and some violence. I laughed here and there but for the most part I was really freaked out. No wonder why I stayed away from drugs. This is really freaky stuff that people get into and lifestyles that people drown in. . .I just don't get it, honestly (the wanting to do it). What a sad sad sad movie though really.

Pushing Daisies (Season 2) 2008 - 3.75 stars - I think I liked the first season much more, but I did love this one too! I was sad that they had to rush the ending and there are still things unanswered that are important factors to the show! I wish it didn't have to end so abruptly. Lots of cleavage again in this, to make up for the lack of sexual content. There is some language as well as some violent sequences. This season is about how Ned and Chuck try to make one another happy and how they can find it. it also is about Olive finding her way of living without having Ned in her life, and Emerson continues to search for his 'lil gumshoe. the aunts try to be happy as well still. great colours and outfits in this as usual!

Giant 1956 (w/ Elizabeth Taylor, Rock Hudson, James Dean) - 3 stars - A VERY long movie. . .nearly three and a half hours long! I watched it in parts. It was a good story. Thankfully one half is on one side of the disk and the other half on the other side. It is about the life of a couple who come together and what their lives are like over a few decades. Leslie is from New England and she married a Texas rancher named Bick. In the meantime a poor lone cowboy who Bick doesn't like strikes oil!

Letters To God 2010 (w/ Robyn Lively, Tanner McGuire, Jeffrey Johnson, Ralph Waite) - 3.25 stars - In the beginning of this I felt it was a little corny to what reality is, but over time it got really good. I sobbed at the end of the movie. It is about the real life story of a boy who had brain cancer and he wrote letters to God. A postman with a struggle reads them, the boy's mother and brother cope with the boy's circumstance, but all the boy has is a deep faith that effects many people. Beautiful story. No language or anything (clean good family film).

Music I've listened to lately:
I'm sorry, I've had a bad week and haven't paid attention to what i've been listening to, and I hardly watched any movies as well for the same reason. . more soon.
I did however listen to bands like My Epic and Sleeping Giant, I can't recall what else though really.

1942 Honeymoon!

A few months ago, my dear friend Laura's grandmother passed away. Her mother gave me a few of her old dresses. One of them was this beautiful dress that she had worn in 1942 on her honeymoon! It is really cool to know some history about a dress, especially to know members of a family to root off of it. I finally got to wear the dress (took me a long time to actually get it to the dry cleaners or I would have posted it sooner).

I look like an elf here. . .pointy ears do that though. love it!

I think I was still trying to talk to my hubby as he was taking this shot. . .I look all discombulated or something!

Vintage 1942 Dress: My friend's Grandmother's
Shoes: Aldo
40s Hat: Becky Drolen

Thanks for your patience about the outfit entries. More will come about soon, but I need to tell you that I won't be able to make entries as often once September comes around since I'm not going to be on the internet much. I do however have a Spiritual based blog called Justice Rolls On that I just started if you are interested in reading it and following. This one will be my fashion-based blog only (or photo blog) now.

Land of Make Believe & Bowling (22 photos)

On Saturday we went with Rob's family to go to Land of Make Believe. They've been wanting to go for a long time with the boys. It was a water park (no photos of the water stuff we did) and a little kiddie ride area. It was younger kid-friendly stuff mainly.

Here I am making a funny face. . .check out my awesome feather hat and cape!

They had a little Dukes of Hazzard car chase ride. Too bad the General Lee charger looks more like a corvette. Leto's being Bo Duke in the car.

He is waiting for the ride to start and can't wait!

A kid joined him so now he has his Luke Duke at his side. Leto LOVED this ride (okay he loved them all).

We went on the train with the boys. Leto sat with his Auntie Rin all the way in the very back of the train.

Leto (with his Auntie Rin) got the special dragon on the carousel ride. All the rest were horses. Micah got to have fun too on it (with his Oma).

aww. little Micah

I went with Leto on the Frog jump ride. I adore frogs.

Leto went flying a few times on this ride.

and Micah fakes coughing and choking to get attention often. This is one of those times.

We went on the train again.

After all the water stuff we did I got dressed and listened to the talking scarecrows.

Rob became a wanted criminal

Micah fell asleep

what a lame haunted house

The following day we went bowling after I was done being Sailor Sally at church for VBS. It was my brother's 36th birthday on Saturday (or is it he turned 12? hehe) but on Sunday he wanted a little birthday get together at the bowling alley with my family. It was dark in there with all the little lights shining around, so we don't have many photos. . they were bad shots.

Here I am showing Leto (helping him really) how to bowl. He got about 30 points each game (no bumpers).

here we are walking back and he was jumping up and down and having so much fun. . .so it's blurry. Oh and that thing on my wrist helps me keep my hand straight when I bowl (because I go crooked without the support. . .skinny wrists do that I suppose). It is vintage 70s (was my dad's, I've been using it for about 15 years)!! We've always been a bowling family . . .all bowled in leagues.

My redheaded brothers. The birthday boy is on the left (age 36), and my other brother is 33.

Leto and Rob doing an arcade driving game

Micah wanted to play too!

then we went out to eat. . .this is what happened to Micah.

more outfit posts will be coming soon.
Been very busy lately!
