Ratings are on a scale of 1-5. Anything rated over 3 stars and is in bold, is totally worth seeing! - I rate pretty harshly.
(sorry I'm so behind on this entry!)
Tron: Legacy 2010 (w/ Garrett Hedlund, Jeff Bridges, Olivia Wilde) - 4 stars - I used to constantly watch the first Tron when I was a child in the 80s and 90s, so of course since I have had that on DVD forever and VHS before that, I had to see the sequel! We heard about this movie being made two years ago and it was such a long wait, but worth it. I remember even last year around this time my husband going, "one more year!". This film was about a son named Sam of Kevin Flynn (from the first film) who pretty much is a rebel who misses his father that went missing. He is the biggest shareholder of his father's company and goes to see if his dad is in his old arcade. Little does he realize he'll enter a world he heard about in bedtime stories from his dad. Will he find his father? If he does could he save him and bring him home? This was amazing. Seriously. I don't recommend seeing it unless you see the first one (Tron) beforehand. Content: Very action packed with some violence (the people are mainly programs so they don't have blood), There is a scene where a man is stripped to his underwear. There are women in tight outfits (but no body parts exposed).
Miss Congeniality 2: Armed and Fabulous 2005 (w/ Sandra Bullock, Regina King, William Shatner, Enrique Murciano) - 2 stars - Goodness I didn't think the first one was this bad, but this was just awful. haha. Because of what happened in the first movie, and because of a break-up, we see Ms. Bullock's character taking advantage of her fame and having an up-tight body guard that she can't seem to get along with. In the process, Miss USA gets kidnapped and she needs a rescue. This was really corny!! content: Quick sex reference in a phone convo, drag queens, drinking, violence and fights, little language.
Solarbabies 1986 (w/ Jami Gertz, Jason Patric, Lukas Haas) - 2 stars - This was so much of a Mad Max/Dune combination film and was a little too corny for me at times, but the friendships built are very sweet. There is supposedly a very low supply of water on earth, where it is left looking like desert land. A bunch of orphaned and abandoned kids or kids in general are sent to a type of military training area where some have been raised since babies. A group of kids (which they all roller skate around) find an orb that listens and talks to them, giving them their hearts' desires. They work at finding a way out of their prison life. Of course this would mean that they are going to be hunted down a lot. content: light language, a boy grabs at a girl in special areas when she doesn't want him to, kissing, future dessert mad max looking prostitutes that offer themselves outside a brothel.
The Lovely Bones 2009 (w/ Saoirse Ronan, Mark Wahlberg, Stanley Tucci, Rachel Weisz, Susan Sarandon) - 3 stars - No I didn't read the book but My Mother-in-law did and loved it and from what we were told, this was pretty different. Either way it was a beautiful film with pretty imagery. It is about a 14 year old girl who is in a bit of her own after-death-world trying to move on in her own way but wanting her justice served. It shows how her family deals with her murder in a time before kidnappings were common (early 70s is where this film takes place). It is a very heart warming and suspenseful film that was good. I think I was just a little disappointed by the lack of justice (which in its own way may have been served). I am odd about books being made into movies though and being precise even if I never read it. (just like how historical movies I like to be in line with the historical events!)
Raggedy Man 1981 (w/ Sissy Spacek, Sam Shephard, Eric Roberts) - 3.25 stars - A woman gets divorced in the early 1940s which is highly looked down upon. She is left with her two little boys to care for. She works hard as an all day all night telephone operator. A Navy man comes around to use the phone and ends up staying until he gets called back out. Her boys find someone to look up to as a hero since their dad never cared about any of them. Two men though were planning on trying to get her to be their woman and are very jealous and cause problems as well. content: men peek in on a woman bathing and you do see a couple seconds of the side of her nude body in the dark, there is also a scene of attempted rape but no nudity, also a scene of kissing and people shown in bed together.
Scrooge 1970 (w/ Albert Finney, Alec Guinness) - 3 stars - I had never known there was this musical version, and I had thought I saw them all before. This was a little different than the traditional story we always have known, since they changed a couple instances that are not in the book or in other versions. At times I thought this was a little tacky, but it was okay. It was good but I just am too into the 1951 version most still. content: I think there might have been ONE "donkey" slip in language, otherwise some scary imagery (had to make sure my boys didn't see the "ghosts" and such).
Jailhouse Rock 1957 (w/ Elvis Presley, Judy Tyler) - 2.5 stars - A man is put in prison for a crime and learns how to play guitar while serving his sentence. He meets a woman when he is released and tries to make it big with her help in the music industry. I didn't really care too much for this movie but the music was really pretty. content: There were some . . too sexy type of ladies in this film (including a stripper although they don't show anything and bathing beauties, etc).
Notorious 1946 (w/ Cary Grant, Ingrid Bergman, Claude Rains) - 2.75 stars - An interesting tale about how a woman is told to be a love interest of a man who worked for her father who they believe is a nazi so that she can spy on him. The man she reports back to however seems to be falling for her and she is falling for him. This could cause some drama and issues. Very sad movie but very good. . .just a little slow at times for me or I may have rated it higher since I love Hitchcock films! content: Intoxication is in the film among other things that are spoiler-like.
Moon 2009 (w/ Sam Rockwell) - 3.75 stars - At first I felt like I was watching Space Odyssey, but it changed things up and had a completely different storyline. Also in other ways it reminded my husband and I of Blade Runner (which is his favorite movie ever). An astronaut in space is getting excited about coming back home after being able to supply energy to earth for three years from the moon. Sadly there is something going on in his head and before he realizes it there is much more about his life that he learns. I don't want to give anything away so I'll leave it at that. Very interesting story. content: language, Sam Rockwell's naked backside (I didn't need to see that movie makers - specifically David Bowie's son who wrote and directed this), and a woman in a bra as he remembers his wife and times they've had together. . .ugh.didn't need that part in there.
Black Adder's A Christmas Carol 1988 (w/ Rowan Atkinson, Tony Robinson, Hugh Laurie, Robbie Coltrane, Miranda Richardson) - 2.5 stars - If you've ever seen any of the Black Adder series (British comedy) then you will fully be aware that there is always sexual references in it. The humor is really funny otherwise. The story here is a twisted version of the Christmas carol where Black Adder Ebeneezer is so good that he goes broke in all his goodness. When a ghost appears to him he learns about his horrible ancestors and is told how he is to continue to be good and not like them. It is a short movie. There is a scene where a face is nudged upon bossoms and we see two men in futuristic slave outfits that are silver looking speedos. There is also some language.
The Day My Parents Ran Away 1993 (w/ Matt Frewer, Brigid Brannagh, Seth Green) - 1.5 stars - I think my I.Q. dropped for a while when watching this. It is really quite corny and a waste of time to see this. It is about a punk kid who orders his parents around so often and plays his rock all the time that his parents run away from home leaving him to do everything on his own. His girlfriend tries to positively influence him. He misses his parents so much that he starts changing and is finding out how to be an adult. There is a lot of over-the-top acting that doesn't help you believe the situations or feelings. content: kissing, immodestly dressed party girls, and slight sexual talk.
Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief 2010 (w/ Logan Lerman, Uma Therman, Pierce Brosnan, Brandon T Jackson, Alexandra Daddario) - 2.75 stars - I read the book. . which I probably should have read it after seeing the movie, but oh well. This was hardly like the book with so many things that were wrong or went against it. I tried to have a good attitude about it. For the most part this was a nice movie about a boy who finds out he's got a father who is a Greek mythology god and his mom is a mortal. He has to get a lightning bolt back to Zeus or there will be chaos in the world with a war of gods and monsters set loose. It was a nice movie. Content: woman gets slapped by a man. There is some violence since they are demi-gods and gods and such and fights and a little blood and monsters.
The Spirit of St. Louis 1957 (w/ James Stewart) - 3.25 stars - It was so odd to see Jimmy Stewart as a blonde, but he really owned this role (does he ever NOT? He is my all time favorite actor!). I think at times it just felt slow for me or it would be a higher rating. It is about the first flight across the Atlantic ocean done by Lindbergh in 1927 from NY to France and what he underwent on his journey before and during it. Good movie. content: I think there was very light language in it.
