Modest Fashion Features #12

Again another busy week for me. The youth group that I'm a leader for had an exciting rock, paper, scissors tournament for the jr. highers. Tonight I'm going bowling with the sr. highers. Otherwise I've been preparing and practicing a speech on modesty and pornography that I'm giving in a few weeks to the ladies of my church, so a lot of my time has been going into that. my younger son was sick this week and threw up a couple times and had a fever the following day plus I homeschool my older son each day in the morning for a few hours. Thank you for the kind comments I received on all those things of my past. Please be patient. I do have an outfit entry planned for the middle of the week!! I hope you'll like it. I'll probably post a movie/music entry this week as well.

These outfits are all so gorgeous. I actually had a VERY hard time choosing a favorite between two of the outfits in particular. Usually I'd go with an outfit I myself would wear. Although I can't find myself in a turban or wearing leopard printed stuff in an outfit, I thought it was the most unique one that I found this week.

7 Things - to Laugh About?

I've been tagged a lot by amazing bloggers for different awards like stylish and beautiful bloggers and other things. I am sorry I haven't answered all of the questions each time or anything but I figured I'd at least finally TRY to do one of these to make up for it.

Seven Things About Me (from my past)
1. Animal Lover
This is a picture of me with one of the dogs I've owned named Precious, who was also the best dog ever. She was my shadow and I trained her by myself. I was 10 in this photo. I've owned a LOT of animals.  If it were possible I'd honestly love to own farm animals one day (horses, goats, chickens, and pigs) but I doubt that will happen, but one can dream.  Here's a list of what I've owned: 5 dogs, 73 frogs & toads, 7 anole lizards, 4 newts, 2 hamsters, 1 cat, 1 rabbit, 2 turtles, possibly more I'm forgetting about. . . .My first two jobs ever was where I worked as a horse groomer at a summer camp for two summers and then working at a pet store for a year and a half.

2. The Nut
For many years I've been dressing up and acting a little odd and out of my normal character, which in a way makes up my character. In these pictures from left to right, top to bottom are photos of me, most taken of me when I wasn't expecting it. I have always dressed silly just for fun and would go to school that way as well.
-The third photo is a mash-up of me dressed like two Doctor Who doctors (I'm a huge geek when it comes to that show) It is the 1st Doctor William Hartnell and the 4th Doctor Tom Baker. I think I was 8 in this photo (probably 1991/92).
-4th photo was at camp they had a costume bin. I would go through it all the time (you weren't really allowed to either!) and well here I was going around camp being Greg Brady. That wig gave me lice! It was not fun.

3. Working Girl
I've been asked a bunch of times what I did before I became a mom, so here's a shot of me at my last job, in which I was a manager doing everything alone at Subway. I loved my job though. I left when I was 7 months pregnant. I was about 11 weeks pregnant in this shot believe it or not. The owners asked me a few times if I wanted to buy it from them. I almost lived at work though (6-7 days a week, sometimes from opening to closing).

4. Skinny-Mini
I lived my life underweight . . all but when I was pregnant and nursing honestly. I was mocked all the time as a kid, especially in my pre-teen/early teen years and then afterwards I actually had many girls tell me they wished they were as thin as me in which I gave disgusted expressions and told them how horrible that was for them to say that.  I was on my brother's weight gainers at 12 trying so hard to gain weight. I ate like a pig (would eat 7 full bowls of frosted flakes every day hoping it would help). Nothing worked other than pregnancy! In this first picture I was in 8th grade. My pants were the right size but I was so thin that they were so baggy on me (thankfully I liked baggy).  In the second picture you can see my immodest days, and I apologize for my past.  I was 14 & 19 in these shots and was so sickly looking. You don't want to look like this. I don't know why people in the modeling world and elsewhere actually try to when I tried not to!  My hips are the only curves on me (and my favorite part of my body still). So just to let you know, I was not bulimic/anorexic at all. I was 5'7" at age 14 weighing 111 lbs (which is bad) and then at 19 5'9" weighing 117 lbs. Right now I am 5'9" 122 lbs, which is supposedly still 2 lbs underweight for my height. Too skinny is unhealthy!

5. Dopplegangers
Since I was about 12, I've been told, "You look like. . ." but most of those people I have forgotten about (other than Sarah Jessica Parker whom years later I still get, and it is my least favorite because she looks scary to me).
I numbered these people in which I've been told I look like (click to enlarge the photo)
Feel free to tell me if I don't though!! I want to just look like me.
1. The top row are all photos of me.
 2. Kristen Stewart (I do see it), 3. Zooey Deschanel (I guess because of how I dress and our eye color), 4. Sarah Jessica Parker (gag.),  5. Sarah Hagan (gag),  6. Madonna Ray of Light years (I see it a lot), 7.Alison Brie (don't see it), 8. Katy Perry (gag. stop. we have long faces and similar eyebrows I guess?), 9. Emma Watson (totally see it with facial expressions especially), 10. Sarah Blackwood (gag, yet I see it a little. she looks scary)

6. My Odd Family

In case you were wondering where I got the idea for always dressing up randomly. . .well here's my family. I have so many photos of my parents dressed oddly on random days just because. They don't do it anymore really, but they are still a little wacky, especially my mom.

This is from my oldest brother's wedding (the one in the middle) and his wife (on the left) and my other brother. Me (5 months pregnant with first child) and my husband (in a kilt). We went in height order (6'4", 6'0" [she's also in wedges that give her height], 5'11", 5'9", 5'6") . .yet we are on a hill that isn't level.

7. Raver Teen
Okay so really I wasn't a raver (never went to raves, never tried any drugs, etc), but this was how I dressed for the most part between the ages of 15-18. I was doing the Vogue dance by Madonna in this photo. I did listen to a lot of happy hardcore, trance, techno. . sometimes I still do. It puts me in a good mood. Check out my cool jelly bracelets. I actually used to wear them completely covering my arms. I had a lot of beaded bracelets and toothbrush bracelets on the one arm. I am proud of my homemade Troll necklace though. My bangs were pink here but you can't tell. However, i still wear baggy pants. I plan to bring them back this summer with some photos wearing them for fun. hehehe. Wait and see.

Modest Fashion Features #11

How are you doing, dear readers? Tell me about your weekends! I did loads of errand running this weekend and had a few friends over on different days during the week! I'm sorry I've slacked on the blog reading, but I've been reading books at night once my boys are in bed, rather than sitting on the computer catching up on blogs. During the day I spend a lot of time with my sons and try to catch up on blog reading during their naptime or watching movies. I've been commenting less because of this and am very sorry. Please forgive me.

This week's features are mainly filled with blogs I read regularly, other than a select few. The favorite of the week is of Amber who is such a very sweet girl. If you've ever talked to her you would pick up on that right away. She entered this photo in the Modcloth facebook contest that I previously mentioned and got second place! She should have won, but did not.

Movie & Music Suggestion Post #38

Music I've been listening to lately:
The Police - Ghost in the Machine album - favorite tracks: Invisible Sun, Every Little Thing She Does is Magic, Darkness
Abel - Lesser Man album - favorite tracks: so far the whole thing I can listen to over and over without any tracks being better than another.
The Beatles - Help! album - favorite tracks: Help!, I Need You, You're Going to Lose That Girl, It's Only Love, Yesterday
Brooke Fraser - Flags album - favorite tracks: Something in the Water, Who Are We Fooling?
Cyndi Lauper - She's So Unusual album - favorite tracks: All Through The Night, Time After Time, Girls Just Wanna Have Fun

I tried finding tracks from each album but they didn't have them!
Enjoy a little bit of it at least while you read the entry.

Movie Ratings are on a scale of 1-5.
Anything rated over 3 stars and is in bold, is totally worth seeing! - I rate pretty harshly.

Easy A 2010 (w/ Emma Stone, Amanda Bynes) - 3.25 stars - I could see myself watching this again. There aren't many movies I can say that about. This is a very funny film! I loved the scene talking about John Hughes films because I adore 80s high school movies. This one reminds me of one actually. It is about a girl who is a virgin but becomes known as the school slut because of a rumour. She is a very nice girl who tries to help many people (not just in reputation), but ends up hated by many as well.  My only issue is that I hate how movies like this and Saved make it seem like Christians try to be goody-two-shoes and are judgmental people who don't really seem to care much about others (I am sure there are some thogh). That hurts because I was a known Christian in my high school but loved so many people and got along with them without telling them how they should live.  content: language, sexual talk, no nudity or anyone in underwear - but there is a girl who does take off her panties from under her skirt, immodest outfits to fit the "tramp look", mockery of others

New in Town 2009 (w/ Renee Zellweger, Harry Connick Jr.) - 1 star - can I say, "BORING"? because it was. What a waste of time. it is about a business woman from Miami who travels to Minnesota to fix up a company and the employees. However she starts to enjoy the town after spending time with the people there.  content: a whole scene focusing on a woman being cold as her nipples are erect through her shirt, language, kissing

Glee season 2, Vol. 1 [3-disk] 2010 - 3 stars - At first this was a bit too sexual considering how the actors are portraying high schoolers. I think that usually puts a lot of pressure on girls watching it, saying that they need to be that way too.  The storyline seems to be slacking a bit in the season but I do love how they are starting to enjoy their individuality rather than just trying to be popular all the time.  The songs have been so-so.  I think Beist is a great character that was introduced.   I love the harmonies between Quinn and her new blonde beau. Rachel cries in nearly every episode and is selfish and I can't take it.  Otherwise the best guest star was Gweneth Paltrow and she made me laugh so much. content: girls hardly wearing anything at all, sexual talk and notions without showing things, kissing, language

Alpha and Omega 2010 digi-animated (w/ voices of Justin Long, Hayden Penentierre, Christina Ricci, Dennis Hopper, Danny Glover) - 2.75 stars - I thought this was a cute movie. My sons loved it. It's about two different wolf packs that seem to get along but don't want to associate as one pack. When they try to unite the packs together, love between some of them start to spark. content: really there are some sexual comments that would go over kids' heads completely and aren't necessarily shock-bad or anything.

Knock on Wood 1954 (w/ Danny Kaye, Mai Zetterling) - 3 stars - I love Danny Kaye, but this movie had a slow pace feeling for me at times.  It is about a man who had odd things going on in his head because of suppressed memories that were effecting his life.  His doctor is a woman and he basically goes wild over her and wants to be with her all the time. Somehow though there are people after him throughout the movie trying to take him down. Great musical numbers and comedy.

Chaos Theory 2007 (w/ Ryan Reynolds, Emily Mortimer) - 2 stars - A man reflects on his past experiences in his marriage when his daughter is about to get married.  It shows how rough things can get and how important communication is in a relationship.  Although the whole idea of it was interesting and I liked how the ending worked out too, this movie did slack a bit here and there.  Also what is up with the girl from Scrubs (elliott) always having to be in her underwear who does a cameo in this? content: language, sexual talk and situations, a whole long scene of a woman in her underwear (not needed)

My Girlfriend's Boyfriend 2010 (w/ Alyssa Milano, Christopher Gorham) - 2.75 stars - This movie is a tricky one because you are thinking things are going on that aren't really going on, if that makes sense. . .it will if you watch it.  A guy meets a girl who is a waitress and falls completely in love with her. He has been trying to write a story for some time, but fails to get published. He wants a family and to settle down with her, but what is she so scared of?? Is she seeing someone else? Good movie and I like that it was clean!!! No sex stuff.  content: some language, cleavage, kissing

My Summer Story 1994 (w/ Charles Grodin, Mary Steenburgen, Kieran Culkin) - 2 stars - The best scene in this movie involved the "hillbillies" and their dancing ho-downs whenever they heard music. Otherwise I think it was interesting, but slow all at once if that makes sense. It's just about life in the neighborhood for a young boy and his family during a summer set in the 40s. Great wardrobe in this.

Edge of Darkness 2009 (w/ Mel Gibson, Ray Winstone) - 3.25 stars - A homicide detective loves his daughter very much, but when she is murdered before his eyes, he investigates it on his own. Little does he realize how big of an issue is at hand. This movie was really good. I love trying to figure out the pieces of how things are and I thought the ending was sad but also sweet at the same time.  content: lots of language, girl in morgue with a sheet not covering her upper part fully (but nothing shown), blood and gore and violence.

Three Guys Named Mike 1951 (w/ Jane Wyman, Van Johnson, Howard Keel, Barry Sullivan) - 2.5 stars - A woman trains to become a stewardess and ends up meeting different men who go wild after her and all share the same first name. Which one will she choose if any?? Kinda silly story but sweet too.  content: wearing a bathing suit for a [pin-up photoshoot and talk about going back to a man's hotel and such. kissing.

Camp Rock 2008 (w/ Demi Lovato, Joe Jonas) - 1.5 stars - oh goodness I know why I don't usually watch films like this. It's about a girl who wants to be cool and loves to sing. She helps her mom cook for a camp all about music. A popularly known guy is at the camp and so many girls want his attention, but he swoons over a song her overhears, wanting to really meet that girl.  The girls in this who are catty make me want to rip out their hair. haha. It was bad. cute though for kids. My sons danced a little to it. content: playing jokes on other kids & lying

The Pistol: Birth of a Legend 1991 (w/ Adam Guier) - 3 stars - about the childhood and rise of one of basketball's greatest players - Pete Maravich. It is an underdog film. The little 8th grader lives and breathes basketball and has moves no one has ever seen before. He wants to try out for the high school varsity team and hopes to one day make it big in basketball because he believes he's the best player ever. Very cute movie. I grew up watching this. Completely clean in every way too.

Love Takes Wing 2008 (w/ Sarah Jones, Haylie Duff, Patrick Duffy, Lou Diamond Phillips, Cloris Leachman) - 3.25 stars - Part of a series that I had to catch up on since I'm in a pioneer mood so much.  It's about a woman doctor (in a time when there weren't many) who goes to a town to take care of its people.  There is a sickness that started at the town's orphanage. Many villagers are concerned and angry about it spreading to them.  Very good. I enjoyed this one even if at times it was a little corny. It had great factors in it and is wholesome!

Love Finds a Home 2009 (w/ Sarah Jones, Haylie Duff, Patty Duke) - 2.75 stars - When Dr. Belinda Owens has been trying to have children for a few years, her close friend visits and is ready to have a baby herself. She has to deal with caring for those in town, her friend + her friend's mother-in-law who is a midwife, and worrying about her adopted daughter now that she's growing up. I didn't enjoy this one that much compared to other ones from this series. Probably it was my least favorite of them.  content: woman in a low cut nightgown when pregnant in front of others (which I doubt ever happened in pioneer days)

You'll Never Get Rich 1941 (w/ Fred Astaire, Rita Hayworth) - 3 stars - When a Broadway producer needs some cover from seeing other women behind his wife's back, he asks a man named Robert Curtis to help him with a woman in particular he had been seeing named Sheila. He reluctantly does it but perhaps is starting to gain true feelings for the woman, who might be doing the same for him! Great musical numbers and beautiful dances. content: assumed affairs or talk of adulterated motives, questionable musical outfits on women

The Man with One Red Shoes 1985 (w/ Tom Hanks, Lori Singer, Carrie Fisher, Jim Belushi) - 1.25 stars - A man who seems to have a boring life, ends up a victim hunted and followed by people without him realizing it, even a gorgeous woman keeps meeting him thinking he's in a certain agency she's been tracking down.  This movie stunk. It was boring. content: woman in a dress revealing bum-cleavage, cleavage, assumed affair, woman in underwear, sexual talk, language

Good News 1947 (w/ June Allyson, Peter Lawford) - 3.75 stars - Great movie from the 40s set in the 20s around a college campus. Many young couples are coming together on campus while issues occur for a hot-headed football player and an unwanted librarian student. The musical numbers and wardrobe are so amazing throughout the film!!!!!!!! I loved it so much! content: kissing and dance bloomers

10th Valentine's Day as His Lady

There is a Modcloth facebook contest and I'm currently in 8th place in. Please vote for me (it ends either today or tomorrow, don't remember)! All you have to do is have a facebook and leave a comment to vote for it!! You can only vote once, but let your friends know too! Speaking of Modcloth, they featured me on their blog for their thrift finds.

Now for the mushiness. . . and a short story. . .

We were together for a little over four months. I had laryngitis & bronchitis. I felt so awful because I was in bed all day surrounded by tissues and wishing I could talk.  My prince walked into my bedroom with a dozen roses and a very sweet card (which I still have).  I don't think he stayed too long, but I was touched considering I felt so disgusting.  He's not much for doing gifts or coming up with romantic idealisms and I've learned to accept that (thankfully I'm also a very cheap and simplistic date).  That was our first Valentine's Day. Today is our tenth Valentine's Day together as a couple. Many of them we didn't even bother doing anything at all (no flowers, candy, cards, etc) and that is fine with me because I'd rather be shown love on the rest of the days of the year rather than feeling forced to on one day each year.  I'm very blessed that my best friend is also my loving husband.

And because he was not really smiling in any of these other photos (he was acting like a baby about being in this snow). . here's one in which I made him laugh.

Yes these are my natural waves. I love them, though they always make my ends look very split but they're really not - just frizzy (I just didn't brush enough before the photos were taken).

He's wearing:
21 Men, Heritage 1981, & Doc Martens

I'm wearing:
Vintage Dress - Purple Deer Vintage
Shoes: Aldo
Flower Hairclip - Lila-Jo
Necklace - c/o Love Hearts and Crosses

Modest Fashion Features #10

I'm happy about all the features this week, because it is filled with really different colors and great styles. It was hard for me to choose a favorite too, but I think I swooned the most over Casey's outfit, plus she made it. She's always been really inspiring with her sewing talents and sweet outfits.
I want to also thank Elaine who not only checked out her feature on my R-EO Tumblr, but she went to the actual Ruby-Eyed Okapi site and read my gigantic testimony there, commented, tweeted about it, and drew in loads of readers afterwards, some who responded. That was really touching for me and humbling (which it is every time I know someone's read such personal details about things I've been through).

Medieval Times & Formspring Video Responses

I know some of you might have watched a movie called The Cable Guy in the past.  There is a scene where Matthew Broderick and Jim Carrey go into an area at Medieval Times to fight. Believe it or not, the place exists but they never allow people to have a tournament against each other there. Everyone has to be trained for it.  There are only 8 castle locations in the US and one of them is about 20 minutes from where I live here in NJ.

We went along with the some of the youth group that I'm a leader in. Here I am with Rob.
It is really a lot of fun where you have a knight in which you cheer for. There is a storyline as well.  The storyline was different since I last went there in 7th grade for a school trip. This is a good thing of course, since that was 14 years ago. My favorite part is the food. You have to eat it with your hands (they give you wet cloths afterwards).  The soup is amazing. I remember loving it when I first went and they didn't let me down the second time around.

This guy took advantage of his stage voice, as he did a bunch of announcements before and during the show.
These are basically all the servers dressed up to introduce the king
Each section had their own knight. We were the Red Knight (closest to the camera). Unfortunately he didn't win, but he got pretty far in the games.

My son Leto turned 4 years old on the 2nd. I didn't take any photos on his birthday, but took this around his special day. I've been enjoying seeing him learn and grow!

And this is my 2 year old Micah

I Might Need Gingham Prevention Meetings

I've been on the ModSquad by Modcloth for over a year now and they put an old photo of mine up on their blog yesterday to ask people to also join the street team.  I thought that was pretty cool.

There's this little elementary school near where I live and it looks like it was built in the late 50s/early 60s or so. I thought it would suit the time period of this lovely dress that I borrowed from Quincy over at Q's Daydream. She also has worn one of my dresses which you can see how we each wore it through each of those links. She knows I love Gingham, so of course she sent me this one.

I love the lace on the dress. so cute.

Just to let you know, it was really sunny and warm on the day I took these. It had to have been at least 35 degrees but it's been below 0 other days, so I was so cozy! The hat made me sweat a little. I don't think I would be able to handle living in really warm climates.

What I'm wearing:
Dress: Borrowed from Quincy
Shoes: c/o Payless
Necklace: Charlotte Russe
Flower Hairclip: Lila-Jo
Hat: borrowed from my husband

Other than that, Since after cutting these bangs (which I have the longer pieces behind my ears for this outfit) I kept thinking about Janet Munro's hair. When I put on Quincy's dress here, Right away I thought about The Swiss Family Robinson in which Janet Munro was in (which I watched far too often as a child). It reminds me so much of these dresses she wore. Therefore I thought I'd share photos to illustrate for you what I mean.

THE Crumb Cake

Since I was a child my mother has been very known by friends and family for her crumb cake. She is always asked to make it, and used to make it for people's birthdays regularly. A few years ago I asked her for the recipe and she didn't know what to tell me since she makes it from habit and memory. Through watching her over the years and sorta helping her make it, We were able to create a working recipe together.  I've made maybe 4 of these crumb cakes only at this point in time.  Because Jan. 24th was my husband's birthday, I made him one (he lovessss it!). I thought I'd share the recipe with you!

This is a piece from the cake! mmm so delcious!

Mrs. Jensen's Crumb Cake (. .Mrs. Jensen is my mom)

What You'll Need:

For cake:
I use) Pillsbury Moist Supreme Classic Yellow (w/ 1 cup of pudding in the mix)
3 eggs
1 cup water
1/3 cup of oil

For crumbs:
3 cups flour
1 cup sugar
3/4 pound butter or margerine
3 teaspoons cinnamon
2 teaspoons Vanilla Extract

Now to make it!!
1. Pre-heat oven for 375 F
2. grease 13x9" pan, lightly covered with flour
3. In large bowl blend cake mix, water, oil, and eggs until moistened, then beat with mixer on medium speed for 2 minutes (or whisk by hand)
4. Pour mixture in pan and put in the oven for 20 minutes - make sure it is lightly browned.
5. While cake is baking, melt butter.
6. Put flour (I don't make it level. . it overflows a little . . I just dig and put it in and it always seems to be enough), sugar, cinnamon, vanilla extract into large bowl. Pour melted butter on top and mix them all together.  If it seems so sticky that it would stick on your fingers, add a little more flour. It should be oily to the touch but not too dry and not too oily - this is the most important and hardest thing (to get the crumbs right).
7. When cake is done put crumb mixture on top of cake immediately in little pieces. Make sure all of the cake is covered completely so that you can't see any of the cake peeking through.
8. put back in oven for 10 minutes (crumbs should look very very lightly brown)
9. When completely cooled off - top with confectioners sugar
10. EAT IT! SO GOOD!

Seriously. . .I've had lots of crumb cakes before but none compare!!!

I feel like a page-boy with long hair

Anyone ever read the Prince Valiant comic strip? Well yeah, I feel like his long lost sister now.

I was looking at these two photos of myself that I took in Feb. 2005 and Apr. 2006
I decided to do a combination of the two of them for a new hairstyle for myself.
Only problem is that I hate hate hate hate it. I went too short and it just is not something I like on me. I look forward to growing it back out a bit to have the elf hair again which I should have just trimmed instead. Thankfully my hair grows really fast.
[I wasn't as modest back then at all, I apologize]

I'm going to probably be selling this cardigan on my etsy store because it's just a little too short on tall and long-armed me. It's so pretty! I wore it without the collar (which comes with it) two outfit entries ago.

I wore the jeggings underneath the dress because the dress is a bit too short on me. I'm sure it looks a little odd, but I felt much more comfortable this way and would feel confident leaving the house wearing it. Around home I usually wear the dress with thigh high socks.

Okay some of my Laura Ingalls Wilder inspiration came to me still while editing these. haha.

When we bought our car a few years ago, we started to notice how many others there were on the road. We never paid much mind to it. Now that I have bangs I see loads of other bloggers with them that I didn't really take note of having bangs before, and now I feel less unique. I'm not one who likes blending in. haha. Do other people have experiences like this?
