Movie & Music Suggestion Post #41

Movie Ratings are on a scale of 1-5.  Anything rated over 3 stars and is in bold, is totally worth seeing! - I rate pretty harshly.

The Majestic
2001 (w/ Jim Carrey, Laurie Holden, Marin Landau) - 3.75 stars - Set in the 1950s; A screenwriter named Peter loves movies so much that he hopes to make it big in the movie writing industry.  Of course now he is going to get blacklisted and ends up getting amnesia when his car crashes.  Somehow he ends up in a small town and everyone believes him to be a missing WWII soldier that grew up there. The town is going to reopen "The Majestic" which was a local movie theatre now that "Luke" is home. Gorgeous costumes and very sweet movie!! content: a couple uses of bad language, kissing

Shag: The Movie 1989 (w/ Phoebe Cates, Bridget Fonda, Anabeth Gish, Page Hannah, Robert Rusler) - 3 stars - A bunch of friends want to hang out together at Myrtle Beach before one of them gets married. There is a lot of dancing that goes on and meeting boys. My favorite part throughout this film is a relationship that gets built between one of the girls and the boys that she meets. They do a lot of dancing together and it's just really a sweet romance without any of the physical issues that a lot of movies try to put between young couples. However there is some of that in this movie too. It was a nice movie with pretty outfits. content: girls in bras/bikinis, kissing, sexual talk, cruelty between catty girls, drinking, smoking, light language

Harum Scarum 1965 (w/ Elvis Presley, Mary Ann Mobley, Billy Barty) - 2 stars - a movie star idol lands in desert land  when he gets kidnapped. He ends up meeting people and falling for others while trying to save a few from slavery. There are songs and dances throughout this. It was a really bad storyline though and was pretty boring. The little child slave girl made me smile but I felt like she was exploited with her dancing. content: lots of cleavage and immodestly dressed women, kissing

Due Date 2010 (w/ Robert Downey Jr., Zach Galifianakis, Michelle Monaghan, Jamie Foxx, Juliette Lewis) - 2.75 stars - This is the 64th Robert Downey Jr. film I've seen. A man is trying to get home to his wife who is going to have a baby. Of course he gets into some situations that cause him to go on a road trip with a guy he's not fond of at all and just makes matters worse for him. This was a funny movie but there were things in it that just caused me to not really be able to enjoy it well enough.  content: language galore, drug reference/use, an adult hurting a little boy and tries to control him, breaking the law, violence, talk of masturbation, dog shown masturbating

Beaches 1988 (w/ Bette Midler, Barbara Hershey, Mayim Bialik) - 3.25 stars - I remember when I was about 12, a girl told me this was her favorite movie ever. I finally got a chance to see if it was good or not, and I thought it was very good.  Two very different girls meet each other on a beach and form a friendship that is kept through years of letter writing. One is a rich girl who feels controlled by her father, and one is a poor girl trying to reach stardom.  This story is all about their friendship. Content: language, cleavage, talk of breasts, couples in bed, slight sexual talk (asking about if someone has had sex with someone, etc)

Summer and Smoke
1961 (w/ Geraldine Page, Laurence Harvey, Rita Moreno) - 2 stars - What a really weird feeling movie. It was kinda creepy throughout it. A woman named Alma who is a preacher's daughter is really a little too wild about a doctor she grew up with that lived next door. He has a thing for the woman at the bar named Rosa.  Alma becomes a bit too obsessed and stalkerish. The ending is really sad and this movie wasn't worth it to me. I don't like depressing films. content: sultry dancing bar woman, kissing, man unbuttoning woman's front part of her dress to hear her heart (nothing shown but woman likes it), violence, drinking, smoking

And Your Name Is Jonah 1979 (w/ Sally Struthers, James Woods, Jeffrey Bravin) - 3 stars - A boy is misdiagnosed as "retarded" but is really just deaf. He goes home and his family after living with other "retarded kids" & the family has to adjust to life with Jonah, trying to help his hearing issues and more. This was a good movie. I had a hard time dealing with it because I was partially deaf as a child and some of it brought back memories I don't like. content: name calling (like using the word "retard" a lot)

Road to Singapore 1940 (w/ Bing Crosby, Bob Hope, Dorothy Lamour) - 2.5 stars - I have always loved all the "road to" movies and think this was the first one made. The concept is always the same in them all, and these three always shine as they fight each other for love or try to figure out who they love, etc.  There is a potion that a couple of sailors try to sell off to make money while also entertaining with songs. The location of course is in Singapore. content: smoking, loads of immodestly dressed women, kissing

Papa's Delicate Condition 1963 (w/ Jackie Gleason, Glynis Johns, Linda Bruhl) - 3.25 stars - This story was kinda strange but the characters are just so interesting that you keep wanting to see what happens. A drunken conductor comes home to his wife and two daughters and each one loves him or hates him in different ways (well, the youngest glorifies him in every way). He is into investing his money and although it seems a little odd to some, perhaps he does it with a really genuine kindness for people. How does his family handle it though? Very beautiful costumes especially.
(I couldn't find a good screen shot)

Featured Band & album

Young The Giant (self-titled album)
I really enjoy the melodic sound of this band! To me it is a combination sound of The Smiths, Jimmy Eat World, and surf rock from the 60s. The band met in high school and grew up in Orange County, CA where they spent time on the beach surfing together and playing music.  Their songs are about love and the beach. My favorite tracks are "12 Fingers", "I Got", "God Made Man", "Strings", and "Cough Syrup"

Here's "I Got" which is so lovely (and is live and not exactly like their album version but pretty close). It is going to be my summer song.

More than Just an Outfit Post - The Spiritual Sister

It was great to get a chance to hang-out this weekend with one of my dearest best friends ever, Lynsie.
She lives on the opposite end of NJ (literally. . I'm at the top part of NJ and she's at the bottom tip of NJ - a 3 hour drive). We had fun together as always.

In case you're wondering, I met Lynsie through the good old internet years ago (I believe I was 19 or 20. . I'm 27 now) but it took a couple of years before we started to get to know each other more personally. Eventually we started to write each other snail-mail letters and e-mails, did an online daily Bible Study together for a couple years, and started to hang out a few times a year. Now we run Ruby-Eyed Okapi together promoting modesty and purity. She's been an amazing friend to me, giving me advice, asking for advice, and we always are able to grow together and learn together. She is one of those people that I respect her honest opinion in telling me when I'm wrong and I review it and try to understand her reasoning. I do the same for her as well. We are able to show love to one another and be spiritual sisters through our love for God. I am really blessed that I have her in my life.

She was going to eat my butterfly.

We didn't plan on growing our hair long together. . I have 9 more inches before my hair is back to the length it used to be at and she never had her hair this long before and is curious to see how long it can get. It was funny because my hair grows really quickly and was noticeably shorter than her hair just a few months ago. Lynsie wanted to take a couple shots of the back of our heads to see who had longer hair. I should have bent down a bit to help. :P
I think I ruined this shot of Lynsie, because she looks amazing in it, but it's sweet.

In case you're wondering. .
My outfit is from Delias,
shoes from Modcloth,
accessories (hairclips and necklace) from Lila-Jo,
and socks from Target.

Lynsie changed her clothes about 4 times before we took these shots. haha. She was originally in this and went back in it. She had some really cute dresses she had on, but I'll photograph her in one of those next time (and it was really chilly out).

Modest Fashion Features #15 + Japan

My husband and I have been following a lot of the news on Japan's recent disaster. We are quite heartbroken for the families who have lost loved ones. If you haven't or would like to donate (or give more), I recommend going through World Vision or Samaritan's Purse who both work very hard to supply and give to the needy while cleaning up and restoring lives that are lost (and giving them new homes as well and temporary shelters until that time). These organizations both were huge helps during the earthquake in Haiti (and are still helping and working there now) and the other earthquakes that took place in South American countries, etc. A lot of people have been at a loss for words of this matter, or confused why it happened. I ask that you do question and pray about your concerns and fears and "why" thoughts to God. Pray or ask how you can be more of help to them as well. It really is great that a lot of bloggers have been talking about it and helping in some way. Sometimes I feel people in the blogging world are too into their own lives and the things they own that they try to block it out and say "well someone else will help them." . . no - you can help! please do!

I'm getting ready to visit one of my very very best friends Lynsie who lives 3 hours south from me in NJ and I miss her so much. She co-owns/runs Ruby-Eyed Okapi with me. I'll be taking lots of photos.

West Goes East & "Where To Get It"

The flood waters are practically back to their normal area now. I didn't know where to take photos for this wonderful outfit (been so looking forward to photograph it, as I've had it for over a month), but while driving around, my husband stopped here. I have photographed myself one other time in this location in a different season, but it's been a while.

You know I love prairie dresses in general, but this one I really do love!! It is so comfortable and unique!
I think I'll live in it. North-Eastern girls can rock the prairie look too, right?

The sun was right in my eyes and I make funny faces when I can't see clearly, and I wasn't really paying attention to the fact that I was pressing my remote when I did and wouldn't wait to see if it was taken already.

I tried to recapture my hairstyle I did for an entry last year, but didn't make it as high.

I have goosepimples/goosebumps because it was windy and isn't very warm yet (so much so that as I type this it is snowing here <3 ). Here's a close up of what the material looks like and I wanted to show you the cute buttons!

Outfit details:
Vintage late 70s/early 80s dress - The Feathered Womb
Shoes - modcloth
--------------------------------------------------------------------
My older son Leto wanted to be photographed (I took a few of him alone). Here's a shot of the two of us together. My husband and younger son Micah were in the car hanging out together.

There is a new site out called Where To Get It. What you do is you sign up, post a photo of a person wearing an outfit you might like a lot (from a blog, a high fashion shoot, street styles, from anywhere), and you ask for help to find the item you like best in the outfit. People will respond and find either modern or vintage items that look similar to what you are looking for (jewelry, pants, shoes, shirts, etc). Sometimes you will even see the exact match of what the item is! It's pretty fun. You also can help other people find their items! The more that you post or help people, the more points you also can receive.
Slanelle, who runs the site used a photo from today's entry to show you all an example of how it works! If you'd like, you can add your own ideas to this entry too! Here's a screen shot example! I have helped some people and have asked where to get a couple items myself if you'd like to check them out.

Movie & Music Suggestion Post #40

Movie Ratings are on a scale of 1-5.  Anything rated over 3 stars and is in bold, is totally worth seeing! - I rate pretty harshly.

Heaven Can Wait 1943 (w/ Done Ameche, Gene Tierney) - 3.5 stars - I was a little unsure about this film at first. I didn't really understand what the concept of it was.  A man dies and talks to a devil about his life and how he was a horrible person. He hadn't actually entered hell at this point though. We see a long review of his life and learn of his genius and how much of a womanizer he was.  However it also shows an amazing love story and it was quite a funny film and filled with beautiful color. I quite enjoyed it!!  content: the idea of sex without being mentioned, kissing, and talk of unfaithfulness.

Morning Glory 2010 (w/ Rachel McAdams, Harrison Ford, Diane Keaton) - 2.5 stars - I was looking forward to this movie but really it was kind boring other than the relationships between people who work together. A woman gets fired from her job and becomes a producer for a morning show. However the show has low ratings and she finds ways to be able to gain higher ratings and more viewers. content: a scene where a woman runs around covered other than without pants/skirt but in underwear bottoms, kissing, language, sexual talk but not graphic

Resident Evil: Afterlife 2010 (w/ Milla Jovovich, Ali Larter, Wentworth Miller) - 3 stars - I've seen all of the Resident Evil movies, but this one was mediocre. It's not one of the better ones. We learn more about where the last film ended off. Alice goes back to find her friends at Arcadia but instead is confused and curious about what really happened to her friends. She ends up trying to solve the issue when she finds one of her friends suffering from memory loss while trying to continue and survive the zombie epidemic. content: violence, language, man looking at a porn magazine in which you see a topless girl on it briefly :(.

How I Won the War 1967 (w/ Michael Crawford, John Lennon) - 3 stars - This movie starts out as a mockery of WWII soldiers from a British point of view. A British Lt. talks about how he won the war and about the people in his unit. It was quite hilarious and interesting in the beginning, but towards the end it gets really serious and sad. It used a lot of interesting concepts of imagery and is wacky and odd. content: soldier walks around in army green underwear, language, violence (not intense but it is there and blood is shown)

Princess Protection Program 2009 (w/ Demi Lovato, Selena Gomez) - 3 stars - Yes I have been resorting a lot to Disney films since I get upset about content in most other films, but I really liked this one. A princess of a small country is about to become queen, when an attack occurrs to take her crown from her. She gets saved by a military man who works for a Princess protection agency. He ends up taking the Princess under his wing to live with him and his daughter in Louisiana. Of course with two backgrounds quite different from one another, it causes a clash but perhaps friendship is possible too.  I thought it was cute and wonderful. content: questionable outfits worn by teenagers, people being cruel to one another with teenage drama and pranks

Ramona and Beezus 2010 (w/ Joey King, Selena Gomez, John Corbett, Ginnifer Goodwin) - 3.25 stars - This was really cute. It shows the imagination of a young girl and what she deals with at school and with the issues in her home-life.  I never read the books as a girl, but I remember learning a lot about them since it was a huge deal when I was in 2nd and 3rd grade in the early 90s. I really loved the little girl who played Ramona and of course I love Ginnifer Goodwin who played her aunt. content: name calling, teenage kissing (very brief)

Love Laughs at Andy Hardy 1946 (w/ Mickey Rooney) - 2 stars - I've seen a few of the Andy Hardy movies, but this was not that great. It is about how Andy falls in love (again) but this time he really wants to marry a girl. He goes back to college just to propose to her, but he meets some other people along the way that cause issues for him to get a chance to tell her of his proposal. It was one of the less funny ones. content: kissing, mockery of short and tall people (was a cute few scenes though & best part of the film)

Anna Karenina 1948 (w/ Vivien Leigh, Ralph Richardson, Kieron Moore) - 2.25 stars - I don't take depressing Russian stories too well. This one is about a woman who has a very well-to-do Czarist bureaucratic husband, but she "falls in love" with a man who doesn't leave her alone and a husband who doesn't want their marriage to end but keeps her from seeing their son. Everything is so dramatic and depressing between all the people that Anna Karenina and those she knows. There wasn't really a happy moment in this movie other than all the beautiful outfits in the film. content: adultery without anything shown but noted throughout movie, kissing, low cut dresses

Ink 2009 (w/ Chris Kelly, Jessica Duffy, Quinn Hunchar) - 3 stars - At first this movie seemed so cheesy with how it was filmed, but there were some interesting aspects in how they filmed it. The story is about a father and daughter who definitely care for one another, but things are happening in their lives that separate them. There is a dream world filled with people who try to help those who dream (specifically the father and daughter) but others are out to get them and destroy them completely. It was interesting. As a Christian I couldn't help but think of spiritual warfare of demons and angels, but I don't think that was the intent even though they did even quote how "a thousand years is like a day, and a day is like a thousand years" which is Biblical. content: lots of usage of the F-word and a few other words, blood, violence but not graphic - people fight each other, cleavage

Easy Living 1937 (w/ Jean Arthur, Edward Arnold, Ray Milland) - 2.75 stars - A wealthy financier is so annoyed by his family because they spend so much of his money, wasting it. In anger he throws his wife's coat out a window. . .and a working class woman has it land on her. Little does she know she's going to end up being involved with the family. This movie was pretty funny and cute. It was a romantic slap-stick comedy. I like Jean Arthur films. content: an assumed affair (though not true), some unkind words said

Romeo & Juliet 1968 (w/ Leonard Whiting, Olivia Hussey) - 2.75 stars - I have always wanted to see this version of the story but never had. We all know the story. They did a great job of telling it, but honestly a lot of the time I was bored while watching it. Ms. Hussey was perfect with how she portrayed Juliet. She was a real teen playing her and I think she really played what a young girl would do in certain situations, so she was the best in the film. I had no idea however that there was nudity in this and that especially bothers me b/c both of them were under 18 when this was filmed so that makes me really upset (being against child exploitation and all). content: lots of cleavage, breasts shown with hair trying to cover but you see a nipple, Romeo's naked backside, violence, suicide

Sherlock (TV Series 1) 2010 (w/ Benedict Cumberbatch, Martin Freeman, Rupert Graves) - 4 stars - What a great T.V. series done in the UK. The music and portrayal of Sherlock Holmes reminded me so much of the RDJ film, but it was also quite different. The idea of this show is that Sherlock Holmes is living in the modern day world and is able to deduct a case to solve it. It is a really cool new way to view Sherlock Holmes. Amazing. They did a great job and Mr. Cumberbatch plays an excellent Mr. Holmes! They truly captured the books (I read them) and made it fit for today. The saddest part of this series is that it is only 3 episodes that have been made! I want more! What a tease! content: violent references and assumed circumstances through means of deduction, slight language

Featured Band & album

Abandon Kansas - Ad Astra Per Aspera album
I've been listening to a 6-song EP Abandon Kansas released in 2009 for over a year now and can listen to it on repeat without tiring of it. I just found out today that they released an EP and a full length album over the past couple of months (album came out on the 7th)! The New album which is called "Ad Astra Per Aspera" is Latin for "To the stars through difficulty"
This made me very happy to finally have a full length to listen to. All their songs are very "chill" and calming. Some of these new songs are fun and more upbeat as well. I love listening to the sounds their instruments make and the smooth singing voice the lead singer has (sorry I don't pay attention to names so I don't know his).  The lyrics are honest and deep about theology and life. The songs that stood out the most to me on this album are "Heaven Come My Way", "Liar", "The Golden State", "A Conversation with the Sky", "Take My Lead", the amazon exclusive track "Don't Forget Where You Came From"

Here's their video for the opening track on the album "Heaven Come My Way"

Modest Fashion Features #14

We had a pretty busy week, but this morning I had the opportunity to give a presentation speech about modesty and pornography at my church to ladies of various ages (pre-teens, teens, older adult women). It went really well and I made people laugh and cry (didn't think either would happen). Apparently my "big line of the morning" was giving a quote my mom has used with me for a long time saying that "men are like microwaves and women are slow cookers" (in explaining how men and women both have sexual desires that should be satisfied within marriage).

I thought it was nice that on Tuesday, one of the shops I bought a dress from posted my picture and wrote a really sweet thing about me and two other bloggers.

Time-Out with my Sons & Why I don't like St. Patrick's Day

Last year I wrote on my blog about why I don't celebrate St. Patrick's Day. I love being Irish, believe me, but I have a hard time celebrating a day filled with history of oppression and murder. If you are curious as to what I mean, you can click on the link to read about it. (it's not long)

My in-laws sent our sons cute St. Patrick's Day items in the mail which they have certainly been having fun with (thank you!!).  Our sons are half Irish so it is only fitting. haha.
Gotta love bedhead on Leto. aw.

My husband shaved our son Micah's head because he kept pulling out his hair (he is a hair twirler). It was getting really bad. We're hoping this will help break the twirling habit.

Frau Wasser Räte

(about the title of this entry) I don't really know German, but my outfit looks so German to me (maybe I'm completely off on that though since I haven't researched it) and I do have German in me (as does my husband. . .both of us have lots of nationalities though). Many of you may have heard about the flooding in NJ we had over the past week. My parents live in a flood zone so we actually took care of my mom for a few days (since she had to go to work) while my dad took care of their house. They still have water in their yard (the river is next to their house normally anyway). I miss living in a flood zone. That probably sounds very weird.

I'm aware that my neck looks super awkward here.

I really think the cute piece in the back of the dress is adorable. Oh and here's the way I have my hair today since my hair is really dirty.

I want to thank everyone for the very kind words left on my last entry and all the sweet tweets over the loss of my God-mother, whom I was VERY close with. It was a hard week and I thank you for being patient since it's been over a week since I made my last entry.  I'm back though!

Modest Fashion Features #13

I won't be doing features this week (starting with today's) as it is going to be a rough week for me. My God-Mother has been fighting two different cancers since 1995/1996 (one of those years). She defeated Breast Cancer a while ago now, but she suffered a lot from Ovarian cancer and passed away last night. I loved and adored her. She helped raise me and take care of me OFTEN and constantly supported and guided me in my life. She was one of the strongest and happiest people who loved Jesus with all her heart and I know she's having fun rejoicing with Him now. I will see her again one day and it will be so much fun! If you are interested, this was made last year and is a 22 minute episode that was aired about my God-Mother's battle with cancer. I do make an appearance on her refrigerator a couple times (my God-Mother has always pushed that I do more with my photography) and my Mom also talks at one point in the end of the video (they were best friends. .my mom was her matron of honor - goodness my mom has lost a lot of weight since that was recorded though). Please pray for my God-Father Stephen and their children Jonathan and Joanna (ages 25 - nearly 26, and 20)

-----------
A lot of vintage dresses or retro looking outfits in the features this week!! I can't get enough of blacks & whites combined and funky colors and peter-pan colors apparently! All of these outfits are gorgeous and I am pretty sure I'd wear them all myself if possible hehe!
